Re: Are you ever likely to book for anything well in advance again?
I'm meant to be flying back from Rome today after a nice long weekend there for my missus' birthday. Luckily Ryanair cancelled the flight in their first tranche of cutting back, when this was still a "handful of towns in Northern Italy" thing. Got a refund for that straight away and then the hotels.com apartment was on a free cancellation basis. Actually made twelve quid on that due to the GBP/Euro rates.

Only had one event that should have happened not happen - Stewart Lee's gig in Cambridge. Will wait and see if it's rearranged. Still have a gig, theatre show and festival outstanding. The first two are in May and I'll hold out for the rescheduling as I'll still want to go. The festival is August BH so there's an outside chance it might still happen.

But to answer the OP - yes of course I will. That's the way things are. If you want to go to something popular and you don't have any special queue-jumping/corporate "in" then booking as early as possible is the best way to secure that with the least hassle and arse-ache.

Quite happy that I had just paid a deposit for the trip I had planned and will get that back as a voucher for use within 12 months.

Was days away from paying the full balance when things started kicking off.

I said CC payment? Point is, if a holiday is 10k and you pay any part of it, £100+, via CC, then you are covered for the full 10k

Penners, is that up and until the time of the holiday, or until the amount of the credit card payment is cleared in full?

OTB - I like the attitude.

I'm treating my trip as a bit like West Ham. Every time (alright very occasionally) I get optimistic, I get kicked in the teeth. So I've convinced myself the trip is off and if it happens, a great bonus.

Jim - money back and credit with Mrs without having to go surely a massive win win.

Don't worry, this will all be over in time for my birthday trip in June. No isolation, everything will be fine.

I refuse to contemplate that it won't go ahead.

Why would anyone want to do that hell journey and then quarantine for 2 weeks.. Though in all fairness has taken me the best part of that to get over the jetlag on occasion

If an airline gives out a voucher is it to the value paid or for a replacement flight.

Depends. Some are giving cash refund, some vouchers equivalent to the value, some a voucher greater than original value. Some will just let you change the booking, waiving admin fees, just charging any difference in flight costs, if destination changes.

Have a trip to Australia booked for mid November. Fortunately I kept up and renewed the annual travel insurance policy, rather than let it lapse and renew before trip. Cover started well before the C -19 kicked off, so hopefully covered for cancellation costs.

Not sure where I'll stand if flights are running, but say there is an isolation period, for visitors. Not practical to extend the trip by say a 2 week isolation period.

Jim - surely missing the west end show goes in the positive column..

I am supposed to be on the first of a three day break with the family at Alton Towers Resort today. We also have a holiday booked in July and had tickets for a West End show for Mrs C's birthday, it had eventually all been paid off after the credit card took a bit of a battering.

All money we have got back so far and will be getting back in the future is going into savings, we moved in 2018 and since then have promised ourselves that we would build our savings up again without actually doing it.

I'm thinking flights will go up as competition lessens with airlines going bust.

Fuck knows when we'll be able to travel again.

Re: Are you ever likely to book for anything well in advance again?
I have a lot of travel booked. The only thing that's fallen by the wayside so far is Malta this coming weekend (all refunded by the airline and the excellent hotels.com), but I expect Amsterdam and Rotterdam trips in May to be cancelled (I'll have to use insurance there). I'm hoping some June trips will still go ahead. Had a few flights booked for the Euros but they were mostly cancellable dependent on where England what England qualified for. After that I'm sure everything will be back to normal.

And I'll still be booking waaaay in advance. Getting ready to press the button on my first (and most likely last) trip to Dubai for the end of March next year. I can't see this being an annual thing!

Penners: are you sure that a debit card payment (whether for the whole sum, or just a deposit as in your example) gives you protection? First I've heard of it. Point me to the legislation please.

What airline is it? If they've cancelled the flight, you can almost certainly get a refund. Obviously they want you to take the voucher but you're entitled to a refund.

I've got about £1300 outstanding on city breaks before September. Will have to assess each one as it comes.

I had 5 train journeys booked through LNER for West Ham games in late March, all April. LNER have been brilliant, refunded every penny without hesitation.

Was going to book a holiday to Canada before the shit hit the fan.
That would have been 8 grand up the swanee.
This time next year I might fancy going.
At the moment going abroad is the last thing on my mind.
